Henry Lasso was recast for Ted Lasso season 4 with Grant Feely replacing Gus Turner in the role

Feely revealed he trained extensively in soccer as Henry’s athletic skills play a bigger part this season

Turner has pursued other projects, including roles in Loki and a Netflix adaptation of East of Eden

Ted Lasso fans may notice a cast change in the new season 4 episodes.

Henry Lasso, the titular coach’s son, was recast for the Apple TV series’ highly anticipated continuation, with Grant Feely taking over the role that Gus Turner originally played in seasons 1, 2 and 3. Deadlinewas the first to report the switch-up in March 2025, and Feely confirmed his casting on Instagram four months later.

Though Jason Sudeikis hasn’t commented specifically on Henry’s recasting, he told The Hollywood Reporterthat he felt the season 3 ending of bringing his character back to his family felt like the rightful choice.

“The story was told,” the actor said in July 2026. “Ted went home [to Kansas City] to be with his son. I wasn’t going to have Ted uproot their life to justify the money truck. It made no sense to me.”

So, why was Henry Lasso recast in Ted Lasso season 4? Here’s what to know about Gus Turner’s exit and what the shake-up means for the series.

The Ted Lasso season 4 role required soccer proficiency

According to Deadline, Henry grew older and developed some athletic skills that required recasting.

The outlet reported that the character, who is a preteen in season 4 of Ted Lasso, has grown into a skilled soccer player — something Feely alluded to in an October 2025 interview with the Birmingham Parent.

“Henry is Ted’s 12-year-old son who loves to play soccer (futball). That’s all I can share!” he said. “I had to practice a lot of soccer for this role!”

Filming for the first episode of the fourth season reportedly began in Kansas, which could be where Henry’s soccer skills shine.

Feely jokingly admitted to PEOPLE in August 2026 that he’s not as good a player as his character, and that even after getting some lessons from his brothers, he doesn’t think he can pursue a career in the sport “in the slightest.”

Turner was reportedly invited to audition for Henry again

Though Turner hasn’t spoken out about the recasting, Deadline reported that he was invited to audition for the role in season 4.

Instead of reprising his role in the Apple TV comedy — for which he won Best Newcomer at the 2024 National Film Awards — the young actor appeared in an episode of Loki and was a part of the ensemble cast in the Lord of the Flies miniseries, per his IMDb.

In May 2026, he announced on Instagram that he had been cast as a young Charles Trask in a Netflix series adaptation of John Steinbeck’s East of Eden, which stars Florence Pugh.

In July 2025, Feely confirmed his casting as Henry by revealing on Instagram that production had begun on Ted Lasso season 4.

He has since shared photos from his time shooting in London, which included attending an Arsenal game with his on-screen dad, Sudeikis.

“My mom and I got invited to a bunch of Arsenal games by Jason and Brendan [Hunt], and they kind of ... introduced us to soccer,” the young actor told PEOPLE, noting Hunt especially took him “under his wing” when it came to the sport.

“Everyone is super nice; it’s a British cast and everyone is excited to have a kid on set,” he told the Birmingham Parent of the Ted Lasso cast, adding that they all attended a Mumford and Sons concert while filming in Kansas. “They are such a fun group of people and truly enjoy being together.”

Prior to his role on the series, Feely played Luke Skywalker in the 2022 miniseries Obi-Wan Kenobi and was a ghost kid in both Five Nights at Freddy’s films, per his IMDb.

Henry may have a larger role in Ted Lasso season 4

In the first three seasons, Henry’s role was limited to FaceTime calls and sporadic visits to his dad’s temporary home in the U.K.

But the teaser for season 4 featured Ted’s son at his games as the new coach of a second-division women’s football team, and first-look photos showed the father and son having a meal at The Crown & Anchor.

While Henry very well could be visiting his dad again, his older age and penchant for soccer could mean that he spends more time in Richmond.

Before the premiere, Sudeikis didn’t expand on Henry’s role in season 4, but he said that fans will see Ted in a healthy and honest co-parenting relationship with his ex-wife, Michelle (Andrea Anders).

“It feels real based on the characters,” he told Entertainment Tonightin July 2026. “It just feels like what those characters would do. That they would put themselves and their own feelings, thoughts and opinions to the side for the benefit of their kid.”
