Hannah and Shane Burcaw are navigating social media carefully

After delaying announcing their pregnancy to revel in the joy of the news, the pair open up to PEOPLE about how they plan to navigate their career as content creators throughout the pregnancy and when the baby is born

Hannah and Shane Burcaw, who are known to their millions of social media followers as Squirmy and Grubs for their content depicting their life as an interabled couple, have been having conversations about how they plan to navigate their social media careers after Hannah gives birth.The two announced that they were expecting their first child together on Sept. 8 and, since then, have opened up about how they envision their content will change when they welcome their baby.In a YouTube video posted to their Squirmy and Grubs account the same day, the pair touched on the topic, revealing that they initially didn’t share the news with their followers until five months into Hannah’s pregnancy because they were “enjoying the privacy.”

“We felt like, we are bringing another human into the world; they can’t speak for their privacy right now, and so that as parents is our responsibility,” said Shane. “So, we wanted to take sharing of all this with the world really carefully so that we’re being deliberate and intentional and make sure that what we are sharing aligns with our values.”

Shane, who has spinal muscular atrophy, later explained that another reason they kept the pregnancy private for so long is to protect their news from harmful rhetoric online. “There are going to be a number of people, a big number of people, who are not happy about this pregnancy announcement, and that’s another reason we haven’t wanted to share with the world,” he said. “There are going to be horrible, horrible people in the comments and in the message boards and in our emails telling us that we are making the worst mistakes of our lives, [and] that I cannot and should not be a father because of my disability.”They echo the same sentiments to PEOPLE, with Hannah saying, “Our priority is just to protect the privacy of our baby,” she says, before adding, “because social media is not always great.”

“And we definitely don’t want to subject a child to the kinds of comments that we get,” she adds. The pair are adamant that, because the baby hasn’t consented to being online, and won’t be able to for quite some time, they want to be careful about what they share.

“We know what we’ve signed up for, and we’re excited to share our parenting journey, and how we make it work and all of that,” Hannah continues. “But at the same time, our main goal is just privacy for the baby.”The pair have learned that, no matter what they do, people online will react negatively. The other day the couple shared a photo of them at the art fair and some internet users came for Hannah for eating processed foods.“We’ve gotten good at knowing that people’s opinions don’t really matter,” says Shane. “They’re annoying, but they don’t matter, for the most part.”

The couple is so happy that most of the nasty things that people say to them online roll right off their backs.“Especially now, I’ve had a big shift,” says Hannah, referring to how she and Shane react to hate online.“I see these comments that are so off base about what a huge mistake we’ve made. And, literally, it affects me 0% now, because I’m like, ‘That is truly nonsense.’ And they’re just wasting their time.”Adds her husband, “It’s people that aren’t happy with their own lives, or they’re lying to themselves about how happy they are who can’t fathom that we can be happy. And that’s totally ridiculous.”
