Vin Diesel has announced that the Fast & Furious franchise is expanding into television, delivering the news ahead of the release of the saga’s final film in 2028.

The actor made the announcement during NBC Universal’s upfront presentation on Monday in New York, where he appeared with Jimmy Fallon and told the audience that Peacock was “launching four shows from the Fast & Furious universe”.

“As you all know, we are very precious about these movies but over the last decade, we’ve realised that the fans have wanted more, they wanted us to expand the legacy characters, their stories,” Diesel said, according to Variety. “And for the last decade, the desire has been for us to enter the TV space.”

Diesel said he became more open to television after Donna Langley, chairman of NBC Universal Entertainment and Studios, expanded her oversight beyond Universal Pictures to include the company’s television and streaming operations in 2023.

“And I had to wait till it was right. It became right when Donna Langley started to oversee it all, because that’s when I knew that the integrity of the characters, the international appeal, what makes us all feel like family would be protected in the TV space. The news that I have here today is that Peacock is launching four shows from the Fast and Furious universe,” he said.

However, a source familiar with the matter told Variety only one show was being actively developed at Peacock. The others are in different stages of development at Universal Television.

Diesel will executive produce alongside Sam Vincent through their company One Race. Franchise producers Neal Moritz, Pavun Shetty, Jeff Kirschenbaum, and Chris Morgan are also attached as executive producers.

No plot details have been released yet.

The franchise has already expanded beyond cinemas through Fast & Furious Spy Racers, a six-season animated spin-off produced by DreamWorks Animation for Netflix between 2019 and 2021.

The first The Fast and the Furiousfilm was released in June 2001 and grew from a Los Angeles street-racing thriller into Universal Pictures’ “most-profitable and longest-running franchise”, according to the Cannes Film Festival, which is hosting a midnight screening of the original film on 13 May to mark its 25th anniversary.

The festival said Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, producer Neal Moritz, and late star Paul Walker’s daughter Meadow Walker were expected to attend the screening.

Across 11 films, the series has earned more than $7bn (£5.17bn) worldwide.

The next instalment, Fast Forever, is set for release on 17 March 2028 and is expected to conclude the main saga. The previous film, Fast X, earned more than $700m worldwide following its release in 2023.
