Joy Behar is back at the table, and the women of The View are rejoicing. But with the midterm elections looming, the conversation is turning from the show’s reunion to the political landscape, and Sunny Hostin believes a major shift is coming.
During a conversation with executive producer Brian Teta on the Behind the Table podcast, Hostin shared her predictions for the upcoming elections and why she believes Americans are growing increasingly frustrated with the current administration. And while the political divide remains as contentious as ever, Hostin is optimistic that voters are ready for a change.
“I really think that there will be just a resounding referendum against this administration,” said Hostin. “I don’t think it’s about Democrat and Republican as much anymore or the Trumpism. People are feeling, ‘Is someone going to do something for me or against me?’ That’s what people are feeling. They don’t care about the labels.”
For Hostin, that frustration signals a growing change in the political climate, particularly among Democratic voters. “I can sense a shift. There’s been a shift in energy.”
The conversation then turned to former President Barack Obama‘s return to the campaign trail and whether he remains the Democratic Party’s most effective messenger. Hostin believes that while the party has several strong voices, Obama still stands above the rest.
“I think they have a few, but he’s the chief communicator,” said Hostin. “We know that he’s just so darn good at it.”
Obama recently made headlines for mocking President Donald Trump‘s gold-heavy renovations of the White House during a campaign rally in Cleveland, Ohio. The former president took aim at Trump’s focus on remodeling the presidential residence, including plans for a massive ballroom and changes to the Rose Garden, rather than addressing the rising cost of living.
Obama joked that Trump had “the White House looking like Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory. Just gold everywhere.”
The joke apparently struck a nerve with Trump, something Hostin was quick to point out.

“That Saddam Hussein Cheesecake Factory gold remark clearly got under the president’s skin. His thin skin,” explained Hostin.
“And Trump called him a lousy president in his response to it,” remarked Teta.
“Exactly,” laughed Hostin. “I mean, come on. And he was just voted, I think, the most popular president in U.S. history.”

Teta suggested that Trump’s reaction was further evidence of his long-standing rivalry with his predecessor.
“He really just can’t seem to let go of this competition with Obama,” Teta stated.
Hostin agreed, arguing that Trump’s fixation on Obama goes beyond politics and has more to do with the former president’s popularity and charisma.
“Obama lives rent-free in Trump’s mind because Trump will just never be the cool guy,” said Hostin. “I think Joy said it really well; I think it was yesterday: He’ll never sing Al Green‘s ‘Let’s Stay Together.’ He’ll never have that swag. He’ll just never be the epitome of cool. He won’t. And he hates that.”
