Before it became a global favorite, “The Office” had a surprisingly rough launch. Steve Carell recently shared that the show’s first episode didn’t just underperform; audiences outright rejected it. Speaking on a podcast, he recalled how badly it tested with viewers.
“Our pilot was the lowest-testing pilot in the history of, I think, NBC,” Carell told Amy Poehler on “Good Hang with Amy Poehler”. “People really hated it. They actively hated this show, and I don’t quite know how it got legs after that.” The reaction caught even the cast off guard, considering how successful the series later became.
One major reason for the backlash was constant comparison to the original British version created by Ricky Gervais. Many viewers felt the U.S. adaptation was copying rather than creating something new. Over time, however, the show found its own identity and tone, which helped it win over millions of audience.

Poehler, who hosted the podcast, noted that her own show, “Parks and Recreation”, faced a similar response early on. She recalled how viewers compared it directly to “The Office”, saying, “This is not The Office. We don’t like this.”
Despite the shaky start, “The Office” went on to run for nine seasons on NBC from 2005 to 2013. The mockumentary-style sitcom followed employees at the fictional Dunder Mifflin paper company, with Carell’s awkward yet lovable Michael Scott at the center. The cast also included John Krasinski, Rainn Wilson, and Jenna Fischer.
Over time, its relatable humor, character growth, and unique storytelling turned it into a cult favorite. Today, it remains one of the most rewatched comedies on streaming platforms, proving how dramatically audience perception can change.
