Kelly Ripa would like to apologize to Taylor Swift for what the talk show host feels is a ghastly offense.
“I've been Taylor Swift now for the past, like, 15 years and honestly, at my advanced age, they have to stop making me Taylor Swift,” Ripa tells USA TODAY. “It's not fair to Taylor! It's actually rude. We're being rude to Taylor at this point.”
At 55, Ripa is 19 years older than the “Fate of Ophelia” crooner, who turns 36 in December. On last year’s “Live with Kelly and Mark” Halloween extravaganze, Ripa and her husband of 29 years and cohost of 2.5, Mark Consuelos, parodied Swift and her fiancé Travis Kelce at the U.S. Open. This year, USA TODAY can exclusively reveal that on the Oct. 31 show, the hosts will spoof the 2025 moment that left the world gobsmacked: when Kelce proposed in his backyard, as revealed in a joint, Internet-breaking Instagram post.
The life of cohosts on Halloween: Mark Consuelos and Kelly Ripa put their own spin on Travis Kelce's proposal to Taylor Swift for the Oct. 31 episode of "Live."
For this year’s “It’s Trending” theme, “Live” also takes costume inspiration from recent pop culture phenomena like “Love Island” “Severance,” Mahjong, the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, Benson Boone and Labubu (via a knockoff dubbed “lafufu”).
“Once again, in the grand tradition of us, we have no idea what we are,” says Ripa, who admittedly isn’t able to stay on top every trend or meme. “I was Chappell Roan, who I (mispronounced) as Chapelle Rowahn. That's how old I am! And my daughter (24-year-old singer Lola Consuelos) was like, ‘Ew! What did you say?’”
Ripa confused her lafufu getup for the Easter Bunny.
“I thought we were gerbils,” Consuelos confesses with a laugh.
“They had to explain to us,” Ripa says, “what Labubus were and how we were not even good enough to be a Labubu. We were lafufu.”

Ripa’s Swift costume includes a tawny-colored wig with bangs, striped dress and replica of Swift’s old mine-cut diamond sparkler with a stone “so big, it kept sliding around my finger and falling down.”
Consuelos, who sports a knit polo, shorts and goatee for his Kelce costume, says “Live” relied on screens to recreate the backyard garden proposal, instead of shelling out the estimated $10,000 and $15,000 the NFL star spent on floral arrangements for the big moment.
“The new studio is great because we can change the floor, the walls, the backdrops,” Consuelos says of the show’s space in downtown NYC's Hudson Square. “It's all digital.”
Kelce, 36, popped the question in August, right after Swift appeared on "New Heights," the chart-topping podcast the Chiefs tight end hosts with his brother, retired Eagles center Jason Kelce. In the “Live” rendition, executive producer Michael Gelman dons a thick beard to play Jason.
Michael Gelman, executive producer of "Live with Kelly and Mark," dresses up as Jason Kelce to parody Taylor Swift's engagement to Travis Kelce.
“The one thing I remember about shooting this a few days ago was, my one line as Travis was, ‘A redwood,’” Consuelos says referring to lyrics for “The Life of a Showgirl” track “Wood,” inspired by Kelce’s manhood.
“The whole thing was just large penis puns,” Ripa says, “that will probably go over the head of hopefully everyone.”
Despite Ripa’s reservations about playing Swift, the Emmy-winning talk show host will likely have to play Swift the year she weds. The thought makes Ripa uneasy, as she remembers recreating Kim Kardashian’s televised wedding to former NBA player Kris Humphries in 2011, with the help of Nick Lachey and a pair of stilts.
“That afternoon, they announced that they were divorcing,” Ripa recalls. (Kardashian memorably filed for divorce from Humphries on Halloween 2011 after just 72 days of marriage.) “So let me tell you something, if you want to stay married, you better hope that Mark and I don't impersonate you on Halloween or pretty much your marriage ends. It's just what we do here. We curse relationships, except for our own, which seems to be un-curseable.”

Ripa attributes part of her marriage's longevity to how much affection she has for her husband. The two met in 1995 when Consuelos auditioned for the ABC soap on which she already starred, “All My Children.” Consuelos landed the part of Mateo Santos, opposite Ripa's Hayley Vaughan until the two left the series in 2002. The actors eloped in 1996 and have three children: Lola; Michael, 28; and Joaquin, 22.
“People underestimate this. You have to like the person that you are with,” Ripa says. “Liking them is, to me, the real test of an enduring relationship. Everything we discuss, whether we agree or not, I always like the way Mark presents his arguments. I like his sense of humor. I like how fastidious he is. I like how caring he is about other people. I like his political hot takes, which we are never allowed to discuss on the air. I just like the way he runs his whole operation. I like him. I respect him. … We got married because we fell in love, but I like him still.”
“And when you don't like me, you love me,” Consuelos says.
“And when I don't like you,” Ripa says, “which is very rare, I love you.”
