Tom Holland has been attached to a Fred Astaire biopic for years—five years, to be exact. Now, the project—depicting the legendary dancer, actor, and singer as well as his sister and dance partners—has finally found its full leading trio. According to Deadline, Holland will be joined by Margaret Qualley and Sabrina Carpenter.

Qualley will play Fred’s only sister and original dance partner, Adele Astaire, while Carpenter has signed on to portray Ginger Rogers, the legendary performer who helped cement Astaire’s Hollywood legacy.

Directed by filmmaker Paul King (Paddington, Wonka), the not-yet-titled film is shaping up to be one of Hollywood’s most anticipated musicals. Here’s everything we know so far.

Tom Holland will play Fred Astaire. He is also producing alongside Amy Pascal and Tyler McKenzie.

Margaret Qualley will play Adele Astaire, Fred’s older sister and first dance partner.

The film is based on Kathleen Riley’s acclaimed biography The Astaires: Fred & Adele and will explore the siblings’ legendary 27-year dance partnership on Broadway and London’s West End before Fred became one of cinema’s greatest musical stars alongside Ginger Rogers.

The screenplay was written by King and Steven Levenson (Dear Evan Hansen, tick,tick...BOOM!), with Riley serving as a script and story consultant.

King has said one of the film’s biggest challenges—and opportunities—was bringing Adele’s legacy back into the spotlight. Unlike Fred, reportedly no known footage of Adele Astaire’s dancing survives, making the movie a rare chance to reintroduce one of musical theater’s most influential but largely forgotten performers to a modern audience.

Is Fred Astaire’s family involved?

They are! Fred Astaire's daughter, Ava Astaire McKenzie, has publicly endorsed the project.

“I’m delighted to support this endeavor to celebrate the extraordinary careers and enduring legacy of my father and aunt, who were among the biggest musical stars of their era,” McKenzie said.

Meanwhile, her son (Fred’s grandson), Tyler McKenzie, is serving as a consultant and co-producer.

“I am thrilled and honored to have been entrusted with telling the story of Fred Astaire and his original dance partner—his big sister Adele—to the big screen,” King said via Deadline. “Fred left a timeless legacy of dance on film.”

When will the biopic be released?

There is no release date yet.

The film also remains untitled, and the filmmakers have not announced when production will begin or when audiences can expect it in theaters.
