Queen Letizia may keep things cool and easy with her style for her day-to-day engagements, but with the flick of her wrist, the Spanish royal can turn up the glamour like no other. Yesterday evening, Letizia did just that, as she slipped into a fantastic designer gown and a rare crown to host a gala dinner at the Royal Palace of Madrid.

Letizia and husband King Felipe VI looked regal as ever for their state banquet, which celebrated the visit of French President Emmanuel Macron and first lady Brigitte Macron. Felipe wore a polished black suit with a white bow tie, and Emmanuel followed suit. Brigitte coordinated with her husband in a white-and-silver gown with long sleeves, plus diamond jewelry and a glittery silver clutch.

For Letizia, meanwhile, the banquet provided an excuse to bring out a fantastic, historic piece of jewelry: the Spanish Floral Tiara, which she secured onto her elegant updo.

The headpiece features brilliant- and old-cut diamonds set in silver and gold, crafted into a bouquet of flowers intertwined with leafy vines. It dates back to 1879, when King Alfonso XII commissioned it from British jewelry brand J.P. Collins as a wedding present for his then-fiancée, Archduchess Maria Christina of Austria.

The piece stayed in the family until 1931, when the Second Spanish Republic was declared and the royal family went into exile. Then, the tiara was sold out of the royals’ possession and landed in the hands of Madrid-based jeweler Joyería Aldao. It returned to the family over 30 years later, when in 1962, Spanish dictator Francisco Franco bought the crown back and gifted it to Princess Sophia of Greece and Denmark for her marriage to Prince Juan Carlos (the grandson of King Alfonso XIII, who first commissioned the tiara).

Letizia wore the crown proudly at her palace last night, pairing it with a stunning ice-blue Carolina Herrera crepe gown with flowing cape sleeves, designed by Wes Gordon. A sheer panel on the décolletage was embellished with beaded flowers and sequins that rained down from the neck to the bodice.

Silver platform peep-toe heels, extra-large diamond earrings from Queen Victoria Eugenia’s collection, and the red sash of the Order of the Legion of Honour completed the queen’s breathtaking ensemble.
