Princess Catherine is back on the red carpet, and in a look as fabulous as it is unexpected.
The Princess of Wales arrived at the global premiere of Digger held at the ODEON Luxe in London’s Leicester Square, alongside husband Prince William. The royals attended the starry event in support of The Film and TV Charity, and Kate made quite the statement in a flowy Jenny Packham gown in a deep royal purple, plus a three-strand diamond and pearl necklace dotted with amethysts and featuring a chunky heart pendant outlined with more tiny diamonds.

While it looks totally contemporary, it actually has a rich history. It is the Queen Mother’s amethyst sautoir necklace, gifted by Queen Alexandra to Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (the future Queen Mother) to mark her wedding to the Duke of York (the future King George VI) in 1923. The 103-year-old British royal jewelry piece was designed in the sautoir style of the 1920s.

And this gem isn’t the only one Kate brought out for her rare red-carpet moment today. The royal also wore Princess Diana’s Collingwood pearl drop earrings adorned with white diamonds. These were a 1981 wedding gift from Collingwood Jewelers—a longtime favorite of Diana’s and the entire Spencer family.

A wavy half-up, half-down hairdo, a dark smoky eye, and a glossy pink lip rounded out Kate’s stunning look today. Next to her, William was dapper in a very Hollywood tuxedo that included a velvet double-breasted suit jacket and bowtie. The two were joined by several movie industry greats at the premiere, including longtime friend Tom Cruise.
