When asked what motivates his weight loss, the “Whiskey on You” musician said he wants to perform at his best while on stage. “Keeping the energy on stage and making sure I do that, because I think that takes care of the fans,” he told PEOPLE.

Smith said he also wants to feel comfortable in his clothing. He explained, "I just feel better. It's nice to be able to wear clothes that I like."

“This is a large," Smith continued, referring to his attire for the night. "I've been double X for the last five or six years, so I'm feeling really good."

Further reflecting on how his life has changed since his weight loss, Smith told PEOPLE, “I don't sweat anymore, which is amazing."

"I used to be totally out of breath tying my shoes," he added. “I can jump around a lot more."

The “Bulletproof” singer decided to change his life in November 2024 after he came down with a severe upper respiratory infection that led him to reflect on his overeating and drinking too much.

Speaking with PEOPLE in 2025, Smith candidly opened up about how “rough” he felt when he was at his heaviest weight.

“I knew I was hurting myself, but I couldn't stop,” he recalled. “It was like looking at this mountain and wondering, ‘How do I get up there?' I didn't even know where to start.”

Smith dialed back his drinking and increased his protein consumption as part of his lifestyle overhaul. Within four months of reducing his daily calorie intake, he went from 280 to 225 lbs.

"I still struggle with some binge eating," Smith also told PEOPLE, pointing to a dirty macaroni and cheese pot he had in his sink. "And if I want to have it, I'm going to have it."

He continued, "But I want to find a way to make it a treat versus a lifestyle thing. If I decide I'm going to have mac and cheese, it's okay."

"I'm not even close to my goal," Smith added at the time. "But I'm way happier where I'm at, and I feel like better about the way I look."
