Sir Mick Jagger joins students in an impromptu performance at The Half Moon in St Clements, Oxford

Sir Mick Jagger has performed in front of more than 1.5 million fans in Rio on Copacabana Beach and toured all over the world.

However, The Rolling Stones frontman enjoyed a much more intimate gig when he made a surprise appearance at a pub's folk night in Oxford on Sunday.

Sir Mick, 82, delighted unsuspecting pub-goers when he joined students in an impromptu performance at The Half Moon in St Clements during its weekly folk session.

The rock star performed a cover of the traditional folk song "Handsome Molly", which he previously recorded for his solo album Wandering Spirit from 1993.

The University of Oxford's Oriel College shared footage of the performance online and said they had been hosting Sir Mick and his partner Melanie Hamrick, a retired ballerina.

The college said: "Sir Mick Jagger and partner Melanie Hamrick visited Oriel College on Sunday as guests of the Provost and Lady Mendoza. Mick joined students at Evensong and dined at High Table.

"After dinner and drinks in the SCR (Senior Common Room), a small group went off to the pub where Mick gave an impromptu performance with Rolling Stones keyboard player Matt Clifford and Oriel Politics academic Robert Cheah."

Johnnie Fisher, the custodian of The Half Moon, said: "We were delighted by Sir Mick's cameo at our weekly folk session on Sunday night.

"The Half Moon prides itself on its authentic atmosphere and welcoming community. Our Sunday folk session has been going for many years and is open to everyone – whether you're a beginner player or an international rock star.

"You never know what to expect at The Half Moon."

One pub-goer told The Sun: "We were sitting right by the band when a small group wandered over towards the musicians.

"I caught a glimpse of one of them from the side and said to my mates, 'wait… is that Mick Jagger?'

"A few moments later, someone hopped onto the piano, and Mick just started belting out some lyrics.

"The most surreal part was that almost nobody seemed to realise it was him. There were no crowds and you could really tell just how much fun Mick was having."

The Rolling Stones' new album, Foreign Tongues, is officially scheduled for release on July 10.

Earlier this month Sir Mick said "I'd love to go on tour, I can't wait", adding that although he did not think it would be this year "hopefully it's going to be as soon as possible".

The band, including Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood, last performed together in 2024 as part of the Hackney Diamonds Tour.
