Meghan Markle stepped out for a quiet evening at a village pub this week, joined by her friend Ellen DeGeneres. It was a modest, low-profile moment and, in sharp contrast to the glossy headlines generated by photographs of Prince William and Kate Middleton with Tom Cruise. Meghan’s own appearance drew far less attention by comparison. According to one royal commentator, that contrast says a great deal about how Meghan’s “right decision” to return to the UK is actually landing.

Media coverage of two recent outings tells two very different stories. On one side, Kate Middleton and Prince William posed alongside Hollywood star Tom Cruise at the film premiere of “Digger.” Pictures of the actor helping Kate down a staircase dominated front pages this week. On the other, Meghan Markle’s own public outing barely made a ripple.
Speaking on a recent broadcast with Kevin O’Sullivan, royal commentator Kinsey Schofield argued that Meghan is nonetheless working to frame her time back in Britain positively. Sources close to Meghan have reportedly suggested the Duchess is “bowled over” by how welcoming people have been. Moreover, insiders are describing her as thrilled to be back among British well-wishers.

Schofield, however, is not convinced. She pushed back on that narrative, citing polling that most Britons are not keen on Harry or Meghan’s UK return. In fact, recent polls conducted by UK outlets on public attitudes toward the Sussexes’ return have painted an unfavorable picture. Most respondents have voted negatively and were not in favor of the Sussexes back in Britain.
“She’s now painting this picture that we’re so desperately happy to have her back,” Schofield said, arguing the coverage instead placed Meghan on the sidelines of a week otherwise dominated by the Wales family.
The commentator also pointed to images shared by Meghan’s friend Kelly, which showed the Duchess with her children. She also noted that details such as Meghan’s location and a leaked phone number had separately circulated online. For Schofield, that kind of exposure undercuts any suggestion of a warm, low-key welcome. “That is the opposite of being welcome,” she said, arguing that genuine community goodwill would not usually come paired with details being passed to the press.
