Warning: Spoilers ahead for Chicago P.D. season 13, episode 5.

On Chicago P.D., longtime star LaRoyce Hawkins was given his biggest showcase yet with the season 13 episode "Miami."

In the episode, which aired on Wednesday, Oct. 29, Office Kevin Atwater (Hawkins) finds himself investigating a downtown bombing that happens shortly after he reconnects with a former academy friend, Tasha Fox (Karen Obilom), who he's been assigned with for the day. It's not long before the two — along with other members of the CPD — turn their attention to tracking down the culprit while trying to discern whether a nearby stalker has anything to do with the case.

As Atwater and Fox navigate working such an intense case, emotions fly — if only for a short while. Fox reveals at the beginning of the episode that she's planning to take a job offer down in Florida, prompting Atwater to consider life outside of the Windy City. The episode ends with Fox and Atwater having sex, putting a sensual button on their momentary fling.

For Hawkins, 37, it was an opportunity to flex all his muscles on the NBC police procedural, telling PEOPLE that it was his most intense and sexiest episode yet.

Fox and Atwater "already had chemistry," says Hawkins, "but never crossed lines. So at the end of the episode, we have this moment where we just can't help ourselves."

"We just look each other in the eyes, start kissing each other on the mouth," the actor continues recounting the scene. "It was dope the way our clothes started coming off and then she pushed me into the room."

The "coolest part of the frame," he says, is how the camera zooms in "on us walking in the room, but you see her bra next to her gun." Simply put, in that moment, "you can tell we're getting busy, alright. Like, I closed that case," Hawkins says.

The entire episode was a heavy lift for Hawkins because it was the first time that his character was in just about every scene. After wrapping, "the best thing to do is just find a bed and go to sleep," the actor says, explaining that filming the series, particularly this episode, "is very taxing on the body sometimes, especially with the stunts."

While he's no stranger to filming on location all over Chicago, "Miami" stood out. "The way that we've been shooting this episode, I thought I walked into Universal Studios," he says. "You see wind blowing and debris and the particulates flying everywhere."

"And then you look up and you're like, 'Dang, that's a dead body,' " he continues. "The dummies are so good that they look like real people. And then the real people are so good, they really look like dummies, you know what I mean? It's very, very exciting and it makes it easy, honestly, to activate the imagination."

Beyond the stunts, the storyline offered fans some insight into Atwater, teasing a bit about his past life in the academy while also opening the door for what his future looks like beyond Chicago.

"It gets a little deeper every time," Hawkins says of the writing, while explaining that season 13 overall is about exploring their character's roots. "Every season we try to give ourselves themes or goals to hit, and right now, the goal is for us to learn even more about the characters that we started off developing."

Hawkins isn't taking any of it for granted. "I've had some great roles over time and I've been able to learn from all of them in different ways," he says, "but the longevity and the consistency that I've been able to create with learning from Kevin Atwater has really strengthened my confidence more than anything."

"The nature of the role being a first responder, being the only Black cop in the unit, it's a combination of so many things that, honestly, really contributes to feeling very confident and grateful in my skillset over time," Hawkins continues. "I think the longevity on this show has allowed me just the time and the space to just learn and grow. And I feel so much more confident and comfortable on camera now."

Chicago P.D. airs Tuesdays on NBC and is available to stream the next day on Peacock.
