Jenny McCarthy recalled attending Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise’s 2006 wedding during a recent podcast episode.
The actress claimed that Holmes was “like a deer in headlights” during the relationship.
Holmes and Cruise divorced in 2012.
There’s a lot that people don’t know about Katie Holmes’ marriage to Tom Cruise — at least according to Jenny McCarthy.
“The juxtaposition between Katie at this time and Tom’s world were very polar opposite,” McCarthy said during the Oct. 15 episode of her eponymous podcast, as she recalled attending Holmes and Cruise’s 2006 wedding in Italy with then-partner Jim Carrey.
The podcast episode featured McCarthy speaking with Anne Gollert Hill, who left Scientology after 20 years in the religion. McCarthy claimed that Cruise “tried to bring” her into Scientology by introducing the TV host to the church’s leader, David Miscavige, at the rehearsal dinner.
“I tried to do a perfect passive aggressive but still kind,” McCarthy recalled. “I thought to myself, ‘If I had to work underneath him, for him, around him, I don’t know if I’d be able to survive.’”

After the wedding, McCarthy said Holmes and Cruise had gone to her house for “a few parties.” The John Tucker Must Die actress claimed she would pull Holmes “off to the side” and ask if she was okay.
“At that time, she looked like a deer in headlights,” McCarthy alleged. “This was after the marriage, well in it.”
The actress said Holmes “still seemed like Katie” ahead of the marriage. As Holmes’ relationship with Cruise continued, “there was a shift in her,” McCarthy claimed. The actress also noted that every interaction she’s ever had with Cruise is a positive one.
“Very nice human being,” she explained. “Very programmed.”

Entertainment Weekly has reached out to Cruise, Holmes, and Scientology for comment.
Holmes and Cruise divorced in 2012. They are parents to daughter Suri, 20, who has not been publicly seen with her father since their split. EW confirmed via voter registration records that Suri has changed her last name from Cruise to Noelle.
Cruise, who has been doing a series of rare press opportunities to promote his new movie, Digger, has not been asked about his connection to Scientology. The actor did, however, confirm that the “the rumors are true” about how intense he is on film sets.
“I work hard, and people that work with me, they know,” Cruise told GQ last month. “I expect a lot and I’m up-front about it”

He added, “I’ll be here before you. What experience do you want?’ And I’m very open. It’s not like we don’t have a plan. We have scripts, we have plans, we’re going through it. But I also feel that level of responsibility for—I guess, for everyone.”
