Nastasya Popov, the filmmaker behind the new movie Idiotka, tells PEOPLE Saweetie is "a natural" on a film set
Saweetie and Julia Fox play judges on a fictional fashion reality competition series in the movie, which also stars Camila Mendes, Benito Skinner and Anna Baryshnikov
Idiotka is in select theaters Feb. 27
The Idiotka director is singing her cast's praises.
Writer-director Nastasya Popov told PEOPLE at the film's Thursday, Feb. 5 premiere in New York City that rapper Saweetie, 32, fit right in on the set of the comedy. The film follows a strapped-for-cash fashion designer (Anna Baryshnikov) who enters a fashion reality show competition to try and prevent her family from losing their L.A. apartment."I think that watching how funny [Benito Skinner is], like, I never got to watch Benito Skinner work until he was on set with me. Just seeing his improv and his comedy is just truly one-of-a-kind and once-in-a-generation," Popov says, when asked who on the cast surprised her with their performances during filming.
"He was making us all cry with laughter. Saweetie was also great. She hasn't acted a ton, but she was a natural," adds Popov.
"And, of course, Julia Fox is just, like, Julia Fox!" Popov adds, with a laugh. "They're so down to earth. I'm lucky that they were all so humble and easy to work with and made my job really easy. So it was surreal but also incredible."

Skinner, 32, Saweetie and Fox, 36, play judges in the movie's fictional fashion reality competition, depicted as similar to Project Runway or America's Next Top Model.
"It was kind of the perfect role for me at the time," Fox tells PEOPLE on the red carpet. "I really got to have an alter ego and just play this really out. I guess I am kind of outrageous, but even more to alter [myself]."

Saweetie made her acting debut in 2021 when she appeared in three episodes of the series Grown-ish. She also made an appearance on a 2023 episode of the series Bel-Air as herself and similarly lent her voice for a cameo as herself in a 2024 episode of the HBO Max series Velma.

A synopsis for Idiotka teases that Baryshnikov, 33, portrays "disgraced fashion designer with a dangerously low credit score, Margarita, [who] enters a reality show with a six-figure cash prize to save her babushka’s West Hollywood apartment."
"But as the competition intensifies, slick producer Nicol (Camila Mendes) pushes her to spin her family’s struggle into spectacle, forcing Margarita to decide whether to play along or take control of her own narrative, one unhinged look at a time," the synopsis adds.
Idiotka is in select theaters Feb. 27.
