How Anya Taylor-Joy learned of Argentina’s World Cup win at Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s ‘phone-free’ wedding

Anya Taylor-Joy is revealing how she kept up with Argentina’s World Cup match while attending Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s “phone-free” wedding.

The actress said a waiter thoughtfully informed her that the team had beaten Cape Verde during the nuptials.

“I was like, ‘Yes!’” she cheered.

Not even Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s big day could stop Anya Taylor-Joy from cheering on Argentina in the World Cup.

During a recent installment of LadBible’s Swipe Stuff video series, the Furiosa and Queen’s Gambit actress revealed the discreet way she learned of Argentina’s 3-2 win against Cape Verde while she was attending Swift and Kelce’s phone-free wedding on July 3.

“I was actually in a phone-free event recently and somebody that was working the tables, a waiter, came up to me and was like, ‘Just so you know, Argentina’s just won,’” Taylor-Joy recalled. “Then I was like, ‘Yes!’”

She continued, “So, thank you, [Lionel] Messi! Thank you for making our country so proud.”

Taylor-Joy, 30, was born in Miami but spent her early years in the Argentinean capital of Buenos Aires. Her father is of Scottish and Argentinean descent.

While she didn’t explicitly name Swift and Kelce, their Madison Square Garden wedding was a phone-free event and coincided with the World Cup match. Taylor-Joy attended the couple’s nuptials and, earlier in the day, posed for photographs with musician Kesha.

It’s estimated that around 1,000 guests celebrated Swift and Kelce’s wedding, including Tom Cruise, Ed Sheeran, Sabrina Carpenter, Brad Pitt, and Zoë Kravitz. The couple, who got engaged in 2024, donated $26 million to charities across the country ahead of their wedding and gave away a vintage car during the star-studded event.

The “Love Story” singer and Kansas City Chiefs tight end’s nuptials were officiated by Adam Sandler, with Stevie Nicks and Paul McCartney performing at the reception.

Good Morning America cohosts George Stephanopoulos, Robin Roberts, and Michael Strahan later shared some tidbits about Swift and Kelce’s special day. “It was as intimate as it could possibly be, considering that it was Madison Square Garden,” Stephanopoulos said on air, noting that there was a “garden inside the Garden that was so beautiful.”

He continued, “It’s hard to imagine that a place that big, and a wedding with such stars, could feel so personal and so intimate.”

Strahan described the ceremony as the couple’s “dream wedding,” adding that it “really was amazing” to witness.
