Still, some popular shows didn’t make the cut

The 2026 Emmy nominations are here and they’ve come with quite a few surprises.

On Wednesday, July 8, the Television Academy unveiled its list of nominees for the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, which takes place on Monday, Sept. 14.

This years nominees included a few first-timers and big names, although some familiar faces and big performances were not recognized.

For snubs this year, as HBO’s Rooster earned Steve Carell a nod in the category for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, the series itself did not earn recognition in the overall series category. Other absences included Jon Hamm (Your Friends and Neighbors in Lead Actor, Drama) and the wider Taylor Sheridan universe of shows, which included Landman and The Madison.

Euphoria had a few big nominations, too, with Colman Domingo and Zendaya, but Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, who won over fans with his performance as Alamo, was not recognized. Eric Dane and previous nominee Sydney Sweeney were also not included this year. Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair was also not recognized, with cast members including stars Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek not getting nods for the revival.

Among this year’s surprises, Dancing with the Stars made its long-awaited return to the Outstanding Reality Competition Program for the first time in a decade, being nominated alongside RuPaul’s Drag Race, Survivor, Top Chef and The Traitors. Today shared the news, which marked the first time the competition series had been nominated in the category since 2016. In recent years, the category has been won by The Traitors and Drag Race.

DWTS, which was won by Robert Irwin and pro Witney Carson in 2025, has scored a total of 21 wins of over 120 nominations since it was first recognized by the Emmys in 2006.

While FX’s Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette earned its fair share of nods, including Sarah Pidgeon getting a nod for her performance, Paul Anthony Kelly was not recognized in the category for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.

This year also saw a handful of first-time nominees, with Summer Housebeing recognized in the category for Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program. Chase Infiniti also scored her first-ever Emmy nod for her performance in The Testaments, getting nominated in the Lead Actress in a Drama Series category — marking a major career milestone for the One Battle After Another star.

Also, Heated Rivalry breakout Connor Storrie earned some Emmy love for his hosting gig on Saturday Night Live, although the show that brought him there did not qualify for 2026 Emmy consideration.

The forthcoming ceremony will take place at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles in the fall. Hargitay’s hosting stint follows hosts Nate Bargatze, Eugene and Dan Levy, Anthony Anderson and Keenan Thompson and she will be the first woman to host the awards show since Jane Lynch in 2011.

At the time of the host announcement on Tuesday, July 7, Television Academy Chair Cris Abrego called Hargitay “one of television’s most beloved stars, whose talent, authenticity and extraordinary connection with audiences have made her an enduring force in our industry and in culture.”

“Bringing important stories into the light has been the heartbeat of my career. It’s my great honor to host the 78th Emmy Awards — in the 100th birthday year of my beloved NBC — and celebrate this extraordinary community of storytellers,” Hargitay said in her own statement.

Some of the bigger snubs in 2025 included Selena Gomez and Steve Martin not being nomination for Only Murders in the Building, 1923 coming up short across the board and Natasha Lyonne not getting any love for Poker Face.

At the 2026 Emmys, Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay of Jesse Collins Entertainment will executive produce the telecast.

The Emmys will air live on Sept. 14 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT, on NBC and Peacock.
