Cruise Ship Extends Bahamas Stay as Severe Weather Delays Return

Cruise vacations do not always go according to plan, especially during hurricane season.

Although this year’s Atlantic hurricane season has been quiet, sudden rough seas in South Florida are bringing unexpected tricks for cruisers ahead of Halloween. The weather has forced at least one cruise ship to delay its return to port and shorten its next Halloween-themed sailing.

The National Weather Service is warning of hazardous marine conditions along Florida’s Atlantic coast, with strong winds and rough seas expected to continue through midweek. Inclement weather began rolling into the region on Oct. 25 as my family sailed back to Miami from MSC Ocean Cay in the Bimini islands aboard MSC Seaside. We ended a beautiful day in The Bahamas with a rainy evening and heavy seas overnight.

As of Oct. 26, a gale warning is in effect for portions of the Atlantic waters near South Florida. Forecasters are also warning of strong wind gusts, dangerous surf, and an elevated risk of rip currents along the coast.

These conditions can complicate cruise ship arrivals and departures. Even when a vessel is ready to return, port access may be restricted until weather and marine conditions allow safe operations.

Margaritaville at Sea Paradise Forced to Extend Current Cruise, Shorten Next Sailing

Due to the severe weather, Margaritaville at Sea Paradise is unable to return to the Port of Palm Beach on Tuesday, Oct. 27 as originally scheduled. Instead, the ship is now expected to arrive Wednesday, Oct. 28, weather permitting, according to a travel advisory from the cruise line and the port.

Margaritaville at Sea apologized for the disruption, acknowledging that it may affect passengers’ travel plans. For passengers on board, the delay means rearranging travel and an unexpected additional vacation day in Nassau, Bahamas on Oct. 27. The cruise line is also extending onboard beverage and WiFi packages at no additional charge.

For travelers preparing to board the ship, however, the schedule change means a shortened version of an already short cruise — a three-night sailing to Nassau. Those booked on the sailing who would prefer to reschedule can do so without rebooking fees by calling Margaritaville at Sea.

Passengers who pre-purchased packages priced per day, including beverage or WiFi packages, will receive prorated refunds as onboard account credits. Any unused balance will be refunded to passengers after the voyage ends. In addition to the refund credit, each stateroom will receive a $50 Future Cruise Credit toward a future Margaritaville at Sea sailing.

“The safety of our guests and crew is always our highest priority. We’ll continue to share updates as more information becomes available,” the cruise line added in the advisory.

Margaritaville at Sea Paradise isn’t the only cruise ship adjusting its plans due to the weather forecast. Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas, which departed Port Canaveral on Oct. 24, rearranged its Bahamas itinerary, changing the order of its planned port visits to Nassau and Perfect Day CocoCay.

The different approaches illustrate how cruise lines can respond to the same weather system in different ways, depending on each ship’s schedule and the conditions expected at individual ports.

For cruise passengers preparing to sail from Florida this week, the changes are a reminder that even a short cruise to the nearby Bahamas can be upended by severe weather. Margaritaville at Sea Paradise’s delayed cruise also serves as a reminder of the importance of purchasing travel insurance with trip delay coverage.

Travelers booked on upcoming cruises departing from South Florida in the days ahead should monitor their email for potential embarkation and itinerary updates due to the weather.
