A defining song of country musicās golden era hit a major milestone today.
In 1965, Buck Owens and his band the Buckaroos landed at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart with āIāve Got a Tiger by the Tail,ā a track that would go on to become one of the most recognizable songs of his career.
Released just weeks earlier in December 1964, the song moved quickly up the charts, eventually spending five weeks at No. 1. It also crossed over to the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 25, which was an impressive feat for a country artist at the time.
The track perfectly captures the Bakersfield sound Owens helped pioneerāa stripped-down, high-energy alternative to the smoother Nashville style dominating country music in the early 1960s. Built around twangy electric guitar, a driving rhythm and tight vocal harmonies, the song had an immediacy that felt both raw and radio-ready.

The idea for the song came from an unlikely place. Owens later recalled for the book "The Buck Owens Collection: 1959-1990" that he was writing with songwriter Harlan Howard when inspiration struck after spotting an Esso gas station slogan: āPut a tiger in your tank.ā That phrase sparked the central image of the songāa metaphor for being in over your head in a relationshipāand the rest came together quickly.
āIāve Got a Tiger by the Tailā became Owensā sixth No. 1 hit and helped cement his status as one of country musicās biggest stars of the decade. It also remains one of the clearest examples of the Bakersfield sound, a style rooted in California that emphasized electric instrumentation, sharp rhythms and a more rock-influenced edge.
Over time, the songās legacy only grew. In 1999, it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, recognizing its lasting impact on country music and its role in shaping the genreās evolution.
Owens would go on to score 21 No. 1 hits on the country chart and later introduce his music to an even wider audience as co-host of the long-running TV show Hee Haw. But decades later, āIāve Got a Tiger by the Tailā still stands as one of his signature songs. It is a burst of energy from an era when country music was finding a new, electrified voice.
