The incident comes just days after Joshua defeated Jake Paul in a heavyweight fight in Miami

Anthony Joshua is being treated for injuries sustained in a car crash in Nigeria that has left two people dead.

At around 11 a.m. local time on Monday, Dec. 29, Joshua, 36, was in a Lexus Jeep that smashed into a stationary truck while traveling along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in Makun, according to local news outlets The Punch, The Daily Sun and The Guardian.

The former unified heavyweight champion appeared to suffer minor injuries in the collision, The Punch reported. Two others reportedly died at the scene.

“It was a two-vehicle convoy: a Lexus SUV and a Pajero SUV. Joshua was seated behind the driver, with another person beside him,” witness Adeniyi Orojo told the outlet. “There was also a passenger sitting beside the driver, making four occupants in the Lexus that crashed.”

Orojo told The Punch that the passenger seated beside the driver and the person who was sitting next to Joshua died at the scene.

Joshua and other people injured in the crash have been taken to "an undisclosed hospital,” the BBC reported, citing Ogun State Police Command.

“We are trying to contact Anthony and in the meantime we don't want to speculate on how he is but thankfully he appears OK from what I have seen in the images,” Joshua's promoter, Eddie Hearn, told the Daily Mail. "We are awaiting more information on what has happened and will update in due course.”

PEOPLE has contacted Hearn for comment.

Joshua — who has family roots in Sagamu, a town in Ogun State, south-west Nigeria — shared a video of himself playing table tennis on his Instagram Stories just hours before the crash.

Local police commissioner Lanre Ogunlowo told the BBC that an investigation is taking place following the collision.

Joshua has been spending time in Nigeria since defeating Jake Paul in a heavyweight fight at the Kaseya Center in Miami on Dec. 19.

“There was a lot riding on this fight, a lot of pressure, a lot of expectations, so I had to perform — a lot of people doubt me,” Joshua said in a post-fight interview. “...I took Jake as seriously as I needed to, but most importantly, I took myself as seriously as I needed to.

“I respect myself, I respect boxing and I know what it takes to get in the ring. You have to be prepared and one slip-up could cost you in that ring,” he added.

Paul, 28, went to the hospital following the fight and later revealed that he had broken his jaw, though he reassured his fans that he was "ok" in a video posted on Instagram.
