Christopher Nolan shares four children with his wife, Emma Thomas, who’s produced all of his feature films.
The couple’s firstborn, daughter Flora Nolan, studied collaborative arts at NYU and has worked in the costume department on various shows and films.
All four of the filmmaking power couple’s children worked on 2026 epic The Odyssey, albeit in unglamorous positions.
Christopher Nolan may be a titan of the filmmaking world, but the lauded director is just ‘Dad’ to his four kids.
The auteur shares daughter Flora and sons Oliver, Rory, and Magnus with his wife of over 25 years, producer Emma Thomas. They aren’t just partners in life, but in business—since the college sweethearts wed in 1997, they’ve worked together on every feature film Nolan’s directed, per People.
Making 2026 summer epic The Odyssey was no exception, and this time, the couple brought all four of their kids onto the project. Talking with E! News ahead of the film’s release, Nolan said making the film was “great” because it was a family affair. “I have four kids, and all four of them were able to work,” he explained, adding that they were “all in different departments, scattered.”
“I’d sort of look behind a boat out at sea and see a guy in a wet suit maneuvering the boat, and realize it was one of my sons. Things like that,” the director said with a laugh, adding that his children “weren’t doing the glamorous jobs on set.”

Thomas has similarly discussed the unique experience of working in the film industry with her husband. In a 2018 Vanity Fair feature, she recalled, “Sometimes people will say to me, ‘Gosh, how do you do it? You have four kids, and you make these big movies.’ But the fact that I work with my children’s father means I can bring my kids to work. I have a massive advantage.”

Thomas and Nolan welcomed their first child, daughter Flora, in 2001, according to People. Before long, Flora was making cameos in her parents’ films. She plays a girl on a truck in 2014’s Interstellar, and a girl who gets blown up in a vision in the 2023 Oscar-winning biopic Oppenheimer. While talking to The Telegraph about the latter cameo, Nolan agreed that it was an, ahem, interesting choice to have his daughter’s face melt on screen.
“Truthfully, I try not to analyze my own intentions,” he said. “But the point is that if you create the ultimate destructive power it will also destroy those who are near and dear to you. So I suppose (casting Flora) was my way of expressing that in what, to me, were the strongest possible terms.”
Interstellar, in which Flora had a brief cameo, is also a meditation on father-daughter relationships. The fulcrum of the film is the relationship between Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) and his daughter Murph (Jessica Chastain). Chastain told Entertainment Weekly while promoting Interstellar that she met then-12-year-old Flora on set one day. “All of the clues fell into place. You had to be a little bit of a detective, and when I figured it out, I was incredibly moved: Interstellar is a letter to his daughter,” the actress said. (One such clue? The film’s working title was Flora’s Letter.)
Fittingly, Nolan passed his love of filmmaking on to his daughter. Flora studied collaborative arts and made short films at New York University, graduating in 2024. In an interview with NYU, the recent alum explained, “My dad taught me how to shoot on Super 8 when I was younger and I’ve been into it ever since. I just love the way it looks. “Shooting on film has given me a really great understanding of light and color and I would love to shoot on [a] larger format if I get a chance,” Flora added.
Her IMDb profile lists her as a costume assistant on The Odyssey, as well as on non-Nolan projects like HBO’s And Just Like That… and Netflix’s A House of Dynamite.

Oliver Nolan
Thomas and Nolan’s second child, son Oliver, was born in the early 2000s.
Like his siblings, he’s grown up mostly out of the spotlight, making occasional appearances with his parents at film premieres and glamorous awards shows (like the 2024 Oscars). According to People, Oliver had an early moment on the big screen when he played a baby version of Christian Bale’s character in 2006 Nolan film The Prestige. Nolan’s 2010 blockbuster Inception was first known under the working title Oliver’s Arrow, per People.
In 2020, Oliver photographed his father at their L.A. home for a profile of the director in French newspaper Le Monde, suggesting he’s got talent behind the camera, too. As for his behind-the-scenes role in Nolan’s 2026 film The Odyssey, IMDb credits him as a production assistant on the film.
Rory Nolan
The Hollywood power couple welcomed another son in the 2000s named Rory.
His entry into the Christopher Nolan Cinematic Universe came in 2012 superhero flick The Dark Knight Rises, when Rory had a cameo as a boy on a bridge, per his IMDb. (The film’s predecessor, The Dark Knight, was originally known under the working title Rory’s First Kiss, while The Dark Knight Rises used the working title Magnus Rex, per People.) Rory is credited as an art department assistant on The Odyssey.
In July 2023, Rory joined his siblings and parents on the red carpet for the U.K. premiere of Oppenheimer.
Magnus Nolan

Nolan and Thomas’s youngest child, son Magnus, arrived in 2008, per People. Like Oliver, he’s credited as a production assistant on The Odyssey—perhaps he was the one “maneuvering the boat” that his father referenced in that E! interview. He also appeared in 2010’s Inception as James, the 20-month-old son of Leonardo DiCaprio’s character.
Magnus watched from the audience as his parents accepted the 2024 BAFTA Award for Best Film. Mom Thomas joked he was “looking at me with daggers in his eyes” when she mentioned him and his siblings, adding more seriously, “Your dad and I are the luckiest people in the world but our greatest fortune is being parents to you, Flora, Oliver and Rory,” per Yahoo! Entertainment.
Although Magnus didn’t join his family at the 2024 Academy Awards, Nolan still gave a shoutout to his youngest child in his acceptance speech when Oppenheimer won Best Picture. “And to my children, Flora, Rory, Oliver, and Magnus, who’s not here tonight, thank you,” the director said. (In another speech that night, he thanked wife Thomas for being “producer of all of our films and all of our children.”)
When Nolan did a 2023 interview with Wired to promote Oppenheimer, Magnus took the photograph of his father which ran with the piece.
