Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez announced she is freezing her eggs so she can āfeel more control in [her] lifeā.
The prominent Democrat posted videos on Instagram showing her injecting herself, and announced she would be sharing the process online despite what she called a āpolitical riskā for doing so.
Her decision to chart her treatment publicly came shortly before she said she would not rule out a run for the White House in 2028. She also used the announcement to hit out at the Trump administration for ādenying reproductive careā to women.
Ms Ocasio-Cortez, 36, who is engaged to Riley Roberts, a marketing professional, 38, said she shared the decision to freeze her eggs āto show more depictions of women having full lives in every context and every choiceā.
The politician said she was in a āvery privileged positionā being able to undertake the procedure, adding that she had been saving up for the fertility procedure that can cost up to $20,000 (Ā£14,825).

She said in an interview on ABC News later: āIn this political environment where this administration is denying reproductive care to women across the country, from abortion rights to the ability to carry out a healthy pregnancy, I think itās important for us as leaders to have these conversations and share these processes, especially for working women across the country and normalise them.
āAs women in general, we are not taught about our bodies, we are not prepared for our own lives, whether that is in puberty, whether that is in pregnancy, whether that is in perimenopause, menopause, whether that is in so many different aspects of our lives.ā
In 2022 Roe v Wade, the 1974 ruling which guaranteed women the right to an abortion up until the point of foetal viability, was overturned by the Supreme Court, thanks largely to judges appointed by Donald Trump.

During his second term, Mr Trump withdrew federal guidance that directed hospitals to offer life-saving emergency abortions in states with abortion bans.
He also implemented funding restrictions on reproductive health providers such as Planned Parenthood, using federal funding provision to make abortion care less accessible.
Ms Ocasio-Cortez has previously been vocal about her stance on reproductive rights.
In July 2022 the House of Representatives passed the Womenās Health Protection Act, a bill sponsored by her to codify abortion rights as federal law following the overturning of Roe v Wade.
She was later arrested at an abortion rights rally outside the Supreme Court in Washington.

Ms Ocasio-Cortez said she was sharing the procedure despite the āpolitical riskā of doing so.
āThere is very strangely a political risk, or a political tax, that comes with sharing this info.ā
Egg freezing is an increasingly popular procedure which involves extracting a womanās eggs from her body which are then frozen and stored, then later fertilised.
The announcement further fuelled speculation on social media that she is gearing up for a presidential run amid a surge in support from the Left wing of the Democratic Party, which she has championed since entering politics.
In an interview on Sunday, Ms Ocasio-Cortez refused to rule out a presidential run in 2028 after being shown polling reflecting her popularity.
āIām focused on winning the mid-terms, Iām running for Congress right now,ā she said.
However when pushed, she added: āI havenāt ruled out the possibility and Iām very humbled to the tremendous amount of support out there.ā
